Watauga Lake
Nestled in the Cherokee National Forest and
surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains is
East Tennessee’s 6,430 acre, Watauga Lake.
Created in 1948 after the completion of the
damming of the Watauga River and Elk River,
Watauga Lake provides hydroelectric power
generation for the Tennessee Valley
Authority (TVA).
Known for its scenic beauty and endless
recreation, Watauga Lake is the perfect
place to enjoy swimming, boating, fishing,
canoeing, and even hiking, biking, and
picnicking. Several Cherokee
National Forest Recreation Areas are located
on Watauga Lake and many offer hiking,
grills, and reserved swimming areas. Watauga
Lake is approximately 16 miles long and has
over 104 miles of pristine shoreline, much
of which has been preserved due to the lands
either being part of the Cherokee National
Forest, or a reserve owned by the TVA.
The Watauga River feeds Watauga Lake and is
a unique area filled with great spots to
go
TN Whitewater Rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and
Tennessee Fly Fishing.
Angler’s love casting their lines for
rainbow trout, brown trout, and striped
bass, and rafters find the class II and III
rapids located downstream on the Watauga
River in Carter County to be quite
thrilling.
